Bucs and Brady win opener – Mahomes towers for Chiefs
Dallas Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers start the new NFL season with a win. In addition to the defeat, the Dallas Cowboys also have to worry about their quarterback situation. The Kansas City Chiefs celebrate a runaway victory.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers around superstar Tom Brady won their opening game in the NFL against the Dallas Cowboys and underpinned their claims this season. The most successful professional in NFL history threw a touchdown pass at 19: 3 on Sunday evening (local time) and for a total of 212 yards. A further 48-yard pass to new signing Julio Jones was remarkable – the 45-year-old had not thrown that far since moving to the Buccaneers two years ago. The seven-time Super Bowl champion Brady initially ended his career after last season, but announced his comeback after just 40 days.
“Every time you step onto the field, there is something to prove. It’s a brutal game, you have to be prepared for that,” Brady told NBC. There aren’t many places where he can just be one of many. “In the dressing room, I’m definitely just one of the guys,” he said.
Mike Evans caught the only touchdown pass spectacularly with one hand, but kicker Ryan Succop had the most points in the game, converting four field goals for a total of twelve points and scoring an extra point. In addition to the defeat, the Cowboys also have to worry about their quarterback situation. Dak Prescott was injured, needs surgery and will be out for weeks, according to team owner Jerry Jones.
“It’s very disappointing,” Prescott said, “but injuries happen. I can’t be there for my team for a while, it hurts more than anything else.” The Cowboys last had less than six points in their first game of the season in 1989, in a 28-0 loss to the New Orleans Saints.
Before that, the Kansas City Chiefs, led by a strong Patrick Mahomes, dominated the Arizona Cardinals and won 44:21. Despite the departure of key teammates from last season, like pass receiver Tyreek Hill, to the Miami Dolphins, Mahomes had five touchdowns and threw 30 passes for 360 yards. Hill won with the Dolphins 20-7 against the New England Patriots and caught eight passes, but had no points of his own.
Like last season, the Green Bay Packers got off to a rough start, conceding a 7:23 loss to division rivals Minnesota Vikings. Without the pass receiver Davante Adams, who migrated to the Las Vegas Raiders, quarterback star Aaron Rodgers lacked safe passing stations in attack and more than one touchdown pass did not jump out.
Equanimeous St. Brown, meanwhile, made a dream debut with the Chicago Bears. The German-American scored a touchdown in the 19:10 win against the San Francisco 49ers on the first day of the US professional league NFL. The wide receiver switched from the Green Bay Packers to the Bears for the new season.
St. Brown’s younger brother Amon-Ra also scored a touchdown in the opener, but lost 35-38 with the Detroit Lions to the Philadelphia Eagles. While “EQ” made six points in the end zone for only the second time in his career, it was touchdown number seven for Amon-Ra.
The pass catcher is only in his second season and has now scored in five straight games in the end zone across all seasons. It is the third longest streak in club history.
Jakob Johnson suffered a loss on his debut for the Las Vegas Raiders. The fullback from Stuttgart, who came from the New England Patriots, lost 19:24 with his new team at the Los Angeles Chargers.
