Special honor
:
Dirk Nowitzki’s jersey number is no longer awarded
Dallas Dirk Nowitzki’s jersey with the number 41 will hang under the roof in Dallas in future and will no longer be re-awarded. The former basketball star is only the fourth Mavericks player to receive this honor.
The Dallas Mavericks will no longer award Dirk Nowitzki’s famous jersey with the number 41 and will hang under the roof of the American Airlines Center at the beginning of January. As several media reports unanimously, the ceremony will take place as part of the game on January 5th against the currently best team in the NBA, the Golden State Warriors around superstar Stephen Curry. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is also expected to attend.
Nowitzki is the only player in league history to have played 21 seasons for just one team. The Würzburg man set countless franchise records: Among other things, he played the most games and scored the most points, rebounds, threesomes, free throws and blocks. In 2011 Nowitzki also led the Mavericks to their only NBA title and was named the most valuable player in the final series against the Miami Heat.
The 14-time All-Star has scored 31,560 points, the sixth most in the history of the league. The 43-year-old ended his career in 2019. Nowitzki’s jersey number will be the fourth in Mavericks history to be discontinued. Before him, this honor was bestowed on Brad Davis (15), Rolando Blackman (22) and Derek Harper (12).
