The Spanish government announced that Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez will meet with a number of his European Union counterparts next week to try to rally support for the recognition of a Palestinian state. Government spokeswoman Pilar Alegría told reporters that Sanchez's agenda includes meetings with the prime ministers of Norway, Ireland, Portugal, Slovenia and Belgium, focusing on the European Union's position regarding the war in the Gaza Strip. Alegria added: “We want to stop the humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza and help launch a political peace process that leads to achieving a two-state solution as soon as possible.”
Sanchez stated earlier that he expected Madrid to recognize the Palestinians by July, adding that he believed that there would soon be a “critical bloc” within the European Union to push many members to adopt the same position. Spain, Ireland, Malta and Slovenia announced last month that they would work jointly to recognize a Palestinian state.
