The high-level meeting between Spain and the United Kingdom in Brussels has concluded with “significant progress” that suggests a future agreement on Gibraltar. The foreign ministers of the two countries met this Friday with the vice president of the European Commission, Maros Sefcovic, and established the “general political lines” around the airport, goods and mobility in the Rock. The negotiation is at its “peak”, as Sefcovic indicated several days ago, and the parties have agreed not to offer more details of the agreements reached to preserve the possibility of an agreement.
«Today is not just another day. “It has been an important day and with great progress,” highlighted the Spanish Foreign Minister, José Manuel Albares, at the exit, adding that his intention is to reach an agreement “as soon as possible.” Part of this urgency to reach an agreement is due to the proximity of the European elections, which – if an agreement is not reached – will mean a pause of several months in the negotiations.
Four years after the United Kingdom effectively left the EU and after eighteen technical rounds of negotiation, Spain, the United Kingdom and the Community Executive are trying to close a complex treaty, which will include various aspects from who is in charge of border controls, harmonization tax and pensions, among others.
