Ingress will be the first Niantic game to benefit from this.
Niantic rocked the mobile gaming world in 2016 when it launched its AR app Pokémon GO and sparked a global craze that still has a large chunk of the fan base. But before Pokémon GO existed, Niantic launched a science fiction-based AR game called Ingress Prime which uses OpenStreetMap and Google Maps to create a citywide treasure hunt game.
Ingress Prime is now receiving a serious upgrade thanks to a stunning new partnership with Niantic and Sony that will merge Niantic’s real-world AR technology with Sony’s latest audio hardware, a wireless headset called “LinkBud“, to immerse players even more deeply in a game that uses both the real world and a virtual world.
LinkBuds have a strange shape that creates an incredible audio experience without excluding the real world. Sony’s LinkBuds earphones are designed not to be taken off, other than to be recharged or to go to sleep. But it’s that unique design that makes them the perfect device for immersing yourself in any type of AR experience or AR mobile app games while, at the same time, incorporating the sounds of the physical world.
“We are very pleased to start collaborating in the field of AR sound with Niantic, who greatly appreciate the role of sound in the AR gaming experience. By linking Sony’s Spatial Sound technology with Niantic’s gaming content, we aim to deliver amazing experiences that blend reality with gaming“reads the press release.
