The congressional committee investigating the January 6, 2021 assault on the United States Capitol on Thursday subpoenaed YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Reddit for records detailing the use of social media in the attack.
In said attack, sympathizers of the then president, Donald Trump, broke into the headquarters of Congress and occupied the place for several hours.
This was confirmed by Bennie Thompson, chairman of the committee investigating the incident.

According to Thompson, subpoenas were sent to YouTube parent Alphabet (Google); to Facebook’s parent Meta; and two others for records that might help explain “How the spread of misinformation and violent extremism contributed to the violent attack on our democracy.”
The Committee also wants to know “what measures, if any, were taken by social media companies to prevent their platforms from becoming a breeding ground for radicalizing people into violence.”
The Select Committee has issued subpoenas to four social media companies as part of its investigation.
After inadequate responses to prior requests for information, the Select Committee is demanding records from Alphabet, Meta, Reddit, and Twitter.
