A week has passed since the definitive break between Formula 1 and Russia. On March 1, the Circus removed Sochi from the calendar and forced Russian and Belarusian drivers to race with a neutral license, without displaying national flags, due to the war in Ukraine. To safeguard last year’s efforts, and therefore keep 23 races on the calendar, Formula 1 president Stefano Domenicali and the Liberty Media organization have already moved to look for a replacement. Among the candidates (here the list) there is also the circuit of Jerez de la Frontera, as confirmed by the vice-president of the Government of Andalusia Juan Marin.
“The whole world knows we want a Grand Prix and that’s why we went to London to negotiate a year and a half ago. Then the organizers told us that if there was any cancellation, our region could be the first choice for replacement. We are at the top of the reserve list: in case someone from the city that organizes the races were to give up, we would be there“, These are Marin’s words.
The last Formula 1 Grand Prix disputed on the Andalusian track dates back to 1997. Impossible to forget: this is the final chapter of the challenge between Michael Schumacher and Jacques Villeneuve, with the German who rammed Gilles’ son desperately trying to take home the third world title, the first with Ferrari. Instead, the Kaiser went off the track and was disqualified from the championship.
