VIDEONico’s wife from Steenwijk wanted at least 200,000 euros tonight in the last episode of Million dollar hunt to win. And as promising as it looked in the third round of the SBS6 programme, Nico played away all the large amounts. “You should not defy fate,” concluded presenter Linda de Mol. And so Nico went home with 104,000 euros in his pocket.

In the last final of the autumn season Nico was behind the desk. He opted for suitcase number 19 and had good hopes for a nice amount. For Nico, the number symbolized the birthdays of his family, which he had added together and then divided by four. The sober Steenwijker had no real tactics. “I don’t think there is any tactic. You just have to be lucky and whatever comes to your mind, you’re going to say.”
Nico had taken his wife Huong with him. The two met years ago in Vietnam and had contact for a long time via Skype and Yahoo. But once it was clear that the couple saw a future together, Huong decided to move to the Netherlands for love. They had two children together. But leaving her Vietnamese family also grieved Huong. The family’s dream was to visit Huong’s parents again after three years. And there was one more thing on their wish list: a dormer window.
Full of good courage Nico started the grand finale, but he immediately played the five million away. “It’s almost pretty. Damn,” De Mol reacted with surprise. Nico, however, did not let himself be deceived and judged that there were still enough high amounts in the left column. In the meantime he played away the ten euros, but then it was hit again: in suitcase 11 was the million. He also had to believe it. Fortunately Nico’s wife was there to help him. She chose suitcase two and luckily; there was only a cent in it. ,,Can we switch for a while?’, De Mol joked. After two more suitcases had to leave the game, the bank made an opening bid: 36,000 euros. That was not a difficult choice for Nico: he did not agree and pressed no deal.
A chance
In the second lap Nico decided to increase the pace a bit. That went well for him, he discovered. The bank’s second offer was therefore quickly looming: 74,000 euros. A doubling of the first bid. But Nico still wanted to play a round and therefore closed the box again. Nico also went reasonably well in the third round. The 2.5 million euros, 2 million euros and 750,000 euros were still in one of the suitcases. His wife had meanwhile decided for herself that Nico should go home with at least 200,000 euros and therefore advised him not to do business with the bank, which came up with a third offer of 129,000 euros. Nico took her wish into account in his decision. ,,I’m a little nervous, but we’re going to keep going. You only get one chance.”

That it is once in a lifetimeexperience, Nico also discovered when he immediately lost 2.5 million euros in the fourth round. He was left with some other amounts, but the new offer was not spectacular: the bank had only thrown in 8,000 euros. De Mol thought that was ‘ridiculous little’. Nico was also not pleased with the offer. “The banks have a bad calculator,” he joked. Where Huong previously wanted to play on, the water was now at her lips: she would rather stop. “Do you dare?”, De Mol asked the Steenwijker. Yes, he dared. “I trust my family,” he referred to the number in his suitcase.
That trust seemed to be on his side for a while, but when both Nico and Huong opted for suitcase 15 to open, it went wrong: the two million came out. And that also meant a significant drop in the bank’s offer: 104,000 euros. De Mol thought it was a reasonable amount and Huong was also satisfied with the money. Nico, on the other hand, still had his doubts. “Yeah, you only need one more. But yes, 750,000 euros is also just one.” Those words were decisive: Nico pressed deal.
A good decision, said De Mol. “You shouldn’t tempt fate. If you had taken out the 750,000 euros now, it would have been a really clumsy evening.”
No home winner
It fell viewers from Million dollar hunt tonight also note that no home winner was surprised with a prize.
