They explained to «Emirates Today» that smokers and caffeine addicts are particularly exposed to symptoms of withdrawal headaches, due to the sudden cessation of cigarettes and coffee, which is directly reflected in their behavior, whether in dealing with others or driving a car, and makes them more vulnerable to accidents and emotions.
Dr. Mansour Anwar, Family Medicine and Occupational Health Consultant, said that patients with chronic diseases, smokers and coffee addicts are among the groups most vulnerable to health complications during the first three days of the holy month of Ramadan, so they must prepare in advance to deal with these expected symptoms.
He advised these groups to be calm and patient, and to focus on the spirituality of the holy month and worship, while patients with diabetes and pressure must review their doctors, and reschedule the dates and rates of medications, in proportion to the holy month, as some medications need to be re-evaluated, as well as ensuring a balanced diet. And health, exercise, and avoid exposure to hot weather.
For his part, the family medicine specialist and chief physician at the Specialized Medication Hospital, Dr. Majid Shurrab, explained that coffee addicts and smokers in particular are among the groups most vulnerable to what is known as withdrawal headache, which occurs in the event of a sudden cessation of smoking or drinking coffee or drinks that contain it. Caffeine, and this is necessarily reflected in the emotions and behavior of the person, whether in public relations or even driving a car, stressing the need for these two groups to prepare to deal with the impact of this withdrawal, so that the body gets used to this change.
He continued, “Patients with diabetes also suffer from potential complications due to a sudden change in eating pattern and medication intake times, so it is necessary for these patients to see doctors to re-adjust and evaluate medications, in order to avoid any complications or health problems, especially during the first days of fasting.”
In turn, Dr. Adel Sajwani, a family medicine consultant at Mediclinic Park View Hospital in Dubai, said that people with chronic diseases should consult their doctors in general before fasting, because a diabetic patient has any problem with the level of sugar in the blood or chest problems for asthma patients, or complications. Sajwani stated that with regard to smokers, they are the most vulnerable groups to emotions, nervousness and nervous tension during the month of Ramadan, due to tobacco addiction, which causes problems in the taste of food, in addition to their exposure more than others to diseases of the respiratory system, heart and others, so it is advised to take advantage of the month of Ramadan to gradually stop smoking. radically.
