The majority perception that neither the State nor the Community provide adequate services and financing to the municipality underpins the local feeling
Six out of ten people from Cartagena are in favor of their region becoming a second province within the Region of Murcia. And it is women, those over 45 years of age and those who supported the MC party in the last municipal elections – led by the controversial José López – who are the main supporters of a new administrative and territorial division. This is highlighted by a part of the extensive sociopolitical study carried out in the two main cities of the Region by Sigma Dos for LA VERDAD seven months before the next regional and municipal elections.
The survey also notes a notable dissatisfaction of Cartagena with the treatment that their municipality receives from the General State Administration and the Autonomous Community in terms of funding and services. 81.3% of citizens consider that their municipality is not well served by both administrations.

The identity and relationship issues of the municipality with the Autonomous Community remain very present in the day to day life of the people of Cartagena, as well as in the municipal political debate. The study for LA VERDAD reflects that 62.1% of the population is in favor of Cartagena being the capital of a second province in the Region. Those opposed to it reach 25.5% of the local population, while 12.4% do not have a formed opinion or prefer not to pronounce on the matter.
Only among Cs voters are there more opponents than supporters of the administrative division; those of the rest of the parties do support it
The position in favor of biprovinciality is slightly more widespread in women (63.4%) than in men (60.8%). Likewise, it is very balanced in all age ranges. Those who are 65 years old and older are the most provincial (65.5%), followed by citizens between 45 and 64 years old (64.4%); those between 18 and 29 years old (59%) and those between 30 and 44 years old (58.6%).
MC and PP voters
There are no surprises in terms of the provincialist feeling in relation to the memory of the vote of the respondents. The main supporters of a new administrative order are the MC voters (83.8%), followed by the Socialists (65.3%). 52.2% of those who voted for the PP in the previous municipal elections would support the province of Cartagena, an idea that finds greater rejection among those who in May 2019 opted for Ciudadanos (36.6% are against, compared to 33% in favor ). Originally, the orange party was committed to eliminating the provincial councils and the Senate.

Among the voters of Vox, a party that rejects the Spain of the autonomies, there are more supporters of the province (68.2%) than opponents (25.1%); The same happens with those of United We Can: 56.4% support it and 26.4% do not. There is also outstanding support (59.4%) for biprovinciality among those who in 2019 voted for minority parties that did not obtain council members. In Cartagena, options with a clear localist character continue to compete in the elections, such as the Cantonal Party and Independents for Cartagena.
Older protesters
If the majority is the provincial feeling, it is even more so that of abandonment by the State and the Autonomous Community. It is widespread among women and men. Also among people from Cartagena aged between 45 and 64: 89.7% of them do not believe that their municipality has the financing and services that Madrid and Murcia should provide. Those over 65 years of age are also mostly protesting (85.3%). In the age group between 18 and 29 years is the least numerous group of people from Cartagena who consider themselves mistreated, although they reach 65.6%. Those who most believe that their municipality is well financed and cared for are also located in these ages, although they only represent 32.5%.
As in the survey of the province, the opinion that Cartagena suffers from poor attention by the State and the Community is very widespread among MC voters: 97.3% consider it so. Nor are the voters of Vox (92.8%) nor those of the PSOE (88.7%) nor those of United We Can (88.6%) nor those of Ciudadanos (83.5%) satisfied. The number of dissatisfied is reduced more than thirteen points among supporters of the PP (70.3%). What’s more: 21.2% of them think that Cartagena is well financed. It contrasts with what MC voters perceive: not a single one of those surveyed is happy with what their municipality receives.
