Have you ever noticed that some shops have background music playing, others don’t? But why is that? Aldi now explains its motives.
Munich – Anyone who strolls through the city centers while shopping knows it: background music is played in most shops. Sometimes quieter, sometimes faster songs, in between current hits. What creates a pleasant atmosphere for some is a hindrance for others. Especially for autistic people who have a different effect on music, light and announcements. In Switzerland, the supermarket chain SPAR recently introduced a so-called “silent hour”. Twice a week, selected branches say no music, no loudspeaker announcements and dimmed lights for a certain time.
Shopping without music: Aldi reveals the background
In Germany, too, there are facilities that completely do without background music. So does the discounter Aldi*. The company responded via Twitter to a post by inclusion and accessibility activist Raul Krauthausen, in which he referred to the “quiet hour” in Switzerland.
“Pleasant and easy shopping at #ALDI Nord is important to us,” commented the Aldi Nord account. “As a matter of principle, we do not use any background music or advertising announcements in our stores. Our employees also communicate with each other via headsets and not via announcements, ”clarified the discounter.
Discounters play less music: Rational and conscious shopping
More discounters like lidl* and Net* also do without background music. Jens Lönneker, psychologist and managing director of the Cologne opinion research institute “Rheingold Salon” explained t-onlinethat this has to do with the purchasing behavior of customers. Customers in supermarkets, such as REWE* and Kaufland*want to be inspired by the extensive offer and stroll through the aisles. The music used helps.
In discounters, on the other hand, shopping is more rational and conscious, says Lönneker. By leaving out the music, visitors are not even encouraged to stroll through the store and ultimately decide against a product. Rather, the aim is for customers to “simply buy the products they need and, if necessary, make a few more bargains”. In addition to buying behavior, there is also more spicy reasons*why some shops do without music and others use it consciously. (ph) *tz.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA
