The death this Friday of a woman dying in a hospital after being burned with gasoline in a crowded square in Lima for her ex-boyfriendwho fled, shocked Peru and once again exposed the slowness of the authorities in cases of femicide.

Katherine Gomez, 18, she was sprayed with gasoline by her ex-partner who set her on fire in the middle of a public discussion, being urgently admitted last Saturday to the Loayza Hospital with burns over 60% of the body.
“He fought for his life, but unfortunately, the amount of damaged body made it impossible for doctors to save his life and we have been told that she has passed away,” the Minister for Women, Nancy Tolentino, told RPP radio.
According to the police, the perpetrator of the femicide is a 19-year-old boy, identified as Sergio Tarache Parrawho fled the place in the midst of the commotion caused by the attack that occurred in the central Plaza 2 de Mayo.

An arrest warrant was issued only on Thursday, five days after the attack, Tolentino lamented.
Sergio Tarache Parra fled the place and is still a fugitive.

Peru registered 136 femicides in 2022, against 146 in 2021 and 138 in 2020, according to official data.
