Shelby’s AC Cobra comes back to life, but in a renewed version with a very special style. This is thanks to the American “Classic Recreations”, an Okhlahoma City company specializing in the restoration and updating of high-performance sports cars. The historic model born from the mind of Carroll Shelby, the driver / entrepreneur capable of beating Ferrari, will present a completely new style in this particular restomod called “Diamond Edition”: the roadster, in fact, features a brand new and original bodywork made in 100% polymerized carbon fiber, which also includes the car floor and the two doors, for a very light weight of only 88 lbs (less than 40 kg).

Diamonds and pistons

The Shelby Cobra “Diamond Edition” will be produced in just 10 units by a team of technicians and engineers, and will then be sold at a price of 1.2 million dollars each (1.1 million euros). The car got its name because it celebrates Shelby American’s 60th anniversary. Each model will feature a custom diamond-encrusted nameplate on the dashboard, which will feature Carroll Shelby’s signature. The other big news, then, is under the hood, since the classic 5-liter Ford V8, which pushed the car at the time, has been revised and updated with the “Coyote Ford Performance Gen 3” with over 800 HP of power. , when combined with the optional Vmp compressor. The chassis and independent rear suspension, on the other hand, were designed by Jason Engel, founder and vice president of design and engineering at Classic Recreations.

Gearbox and brakes

If the body of the AC Cobra was made of carbon fiber, the lines of the roadster maintain their classicism, with the exception of some changes: such as the enlarged air intakes and widened wheel arches, as well as greater comfort due to the growth of the passenger compartment, for extra space in the leg area that improves the driver’s driving experience. The car’s manual gearbox is a Tremec six-speed T56 Magnum, which transmits power to the rear wheels, while the braking system is signed by Wildwood, with six-piston calipers at the front and four at the rear.

The precedent of the Mustang

Classic Recreations has held Carroll Shelby Licensing for over 15 years, which is the license to modify and update Shelby American’s cars. The two-door roadster to be produced shortly follows the restomod of the 1967 Mustang T500CR, also with carbon body, released in early 2021. “Carroll Shelby taught me the importance of pushing the limits through innovation and passion – said Jason Engel, founder of the company – Carroll’s dream has always been to place the most powerful engine possible in the lightest and most agile car imaginable, and it is our honor to have faced this challenge “. Shelby president Gary Patterson echoes him: “What Classic Recreations has achieved with its carbon fiber program is a continuation of a dream that Carroll Shelby himself had envisioned for the future.”
