It is an infection caused by fungi, belonging to the Candida genus, which can be sexually transmitted. The mushroom Candida albicans it usually lives in the organism without giving any sign of itself, as a “commensal” of the skin and mucous membranes. Among the factors favoring candidiasis are pregnancy, stress, certain eating habits (a lot of sugar or a lot of alcohol), the abuse of vaginal douching. Furthermore, the risk of developing candidiasis increases during therapy with antibiotics or steroids or in the presence of diabetes.
Symptoms: in men redness of the penis, itching, burning, whitish patina on the glans (balanoposthitis); in women, whitish “cheesy” non-malodorous discharge, burning when urinating, itching in the genital area (vulvovaginitis).
Treatment: usually local therapy is used (ova or cream) and, in severe cases, oral therapy based on antifungals.
Prevention: control your diet (reducing sugar and alcohol intake), avoid wearing tight clothes and underwear made of synthetic fabric.
