Several people were slightly injured when a fire broke out in a prison in the southern German town of Memmingen on Thursday. A police spokesman said a prison guard first noticed smoke coming from a cell. Prison guards quickly managed to put out the fire and remove the prisoner from the cell where the fire was raging.
However, the 27-year-old prisoner and another prisoner suffered smoke inhalation from the fire. Dozens of guards deployed to contain the incident were also affected by the fumes. Some were taken to hospital, but none were seriously injured. There was no need to evacuate the prison. Police say they believe the prisoner deliberately set the fire in his cell.
