How would you see the idea of once again taking on the role of Sam Stonea year and a half after the release of the last chapter, in a fight to the sound of bullets in the middle of snow-covered Siberia, between hordes of angry invading aliens, industrial buildings and a fair number of new products in tow? Serious Sam: Siberian Mayhem in short it is just that, and today we analyze it in the review.
The events of this new chapter fit into that part of the puzzle that was missing in Serious Sam 4 (here our review), placing itself in the time frame before the final mission of the latter: Siberian Mayhem it is basically a Stand Alone DLC that will be able to give us a good amount of new virtual carnage to the rhythm of bullets. I emphasize that given its stand alone nature, it is not needed to possess Serious Sam 4 in order to play this chapter.
Welcome back, Sam!
The beginning of the game sees us catapulted without too many compliments into the Siberian snowy territories, where the beefy Sam Stone is on the hunt for the traitor general, who has gone over to the side of the aliens playing a disastrously important part in the events. He sought refuge, but our hero did not give up, following him to the end of the world … finding, as always, extreme resistance from the alien hordes.
The industrial structures and the communication buildings, however, will only be the beginning of the hunt for Brandand for approx 6/7 hours of gameplay (also dedicating yourself to secondary objectives) you will travel far and wide in different locations – which we do not anticipate – to get the better of and fulfill certain objectives. You will also have the opportunity to meet gods, as in the main game secondary characterseven with a reputation comparable to that of Sam himself.
Unfortunately the skill tree of our hero will be reset, but given the game’s reduced longevity and acquired familiarity, it shouldn’t be a problem for you to use it wisely. In terms of gameplay we find practically no differences compared to Serious Sam 4, although some notable additions have been made from the point of view of weapons and means. Driving here and there with the snowmobile, passing by an armored Mech and equipped with a giant chainsaw instead of an arm, until you get to a crossbow that can really hurt.
The gadgetalways very useful and crazy, which alternate with the discovery of audio diaries and documents that describe what is actually happening (or has just happened.
In terms of difficulty, clearly a lot depends on what you can choose at the beginning of the game (as always with a good variety of levels available), but the general line seemed to us slightly more pushed than Serious Sam 4, especially on certain occasions (even in the optional objectives) where it was necessary more than a few tries to study a functional strategy and to move on to the next phase. Yes, why this Siberian Mayhem it’s frenetic enough, but you have to know how to manage and dose everything, both based on the situation and based on the build we are creating thanks to the skills unlocked.
A few less aliens
On the technical level we do not find particular differences compared to the main chapter, so much so that – as well as conceptually – it seems to us that we are still playing a pocket version of Serious Sam 4. However, this must also be related to the fact that the price Of Serious Sam; Siberian Mayhem it is not prohibitive at all, and for the level of experience it offers (and its duration), the convenience in buying it is there, and it is not small, which we have taken into account for the final review evaluation.
Graphically we will find some levels of play to be expected very pleasing to the eye, landscapes that sometimes clash a little with the uproar of bullets that will be unleashed at every step. While we don’t cry out for a miracle from this point of view, we found the restyling of some models as regards weapons and monsters, which certainly does not do them and makes us feel the “change of climate” even more in our guts.
