Serena Williams has graced her return to the WTA Tour with a victory. The 40-year-old American played her first game in a year on the grass in the English city of Eastbourne. With the Tunisian Ons Jabeur she won in the first round of the doubles via a match tiebreak against Marie Bouzkova from the Czech Republic and the Spanish Sara Sorribes Tormo: 2-6 6-3 13-11.
Williams played her previous match at Wimbledon last year. She gave up in London in the first round with an ankle injury and then withdrew from the Olympics. The 23-time Grand Slam champion also missed the US Open due to a hamstring injury.
Williams, who has fallen far in the world rankings, announced her return last week. Starting next week, she will participate in Wimbledon with a wild card, the grand slam tournament that she won seven times. In the run-up to the London grass tournament, the American picks up rhythm in Eastbourne.
In the first set she had little to say with Jabeur against Bouzkova and Sorribes Tormo, but after that things got better and better for the occasional duo. After both couples lost match points in the decisive match tiebreak, Williams and Jabeur eventually took the win.
