Summer school could become a reality for millions of K-12 students
The debate on the extension of school during the summer it has been going on for several years. Working parents' associations have repeatedly asked the government to legislate to create tools that can guarantee the smooth carrying out of work activities even during the period in which schools are closed. It is clear that measures will have to be applied that improve the quality of life of both parents and students, without forgetting teachers, who are an often forgotten, poorly paid category that works in dilapidated and poorly organized structures. What is certain is that a parent often cannot afford extra-curricular activities by paying exorbitant amounts of money for them.
The Summer Plan of the Minister of Education Valditara has the aim of guaranteeing inclusion, sociability and skills enhancement activities for students from primary to high school. The project, financed for the years 2023/24 and 2024/25 with a budget of 400 million euros, will involve between 800 thousand and 1.3 million students.
The schools they will have the freedom to propose recreational initiatives, sports, music or theater workshops, as well as disciplinary in-depth or recovery activities. The activities can be managed by the school itself or in collaboration with bodies, local associations, universities and third sector organisations, within the school buildings.
The Minister of Education Giuseppe Valditara declared:
“By carrying out aggregation and training activities especially for children and young people who, in the summer, cannot count on other experiences of personal enrichment and growth due to the work needs of their parents or particular family situations”.
It is expected that none teacher is obliged to work during the summer, but will be able to join the projects on a voluntary basis with compensation “within the limits of available resources”. In addition to the 400 million allocated by the government, the Summer Plan will be able to count on a further 750 million euros coming from Pnrr funds to combat school dropout, and another 600 million for the strengthening of Stem skills.
This is an important initiative to promote “the inclusion and sociability of students”, offering them an opportunity for growth and learning even during the summer months. As well as being a great organizational tool for parents.
