Westerners Residents’ wishes to keep Tuomela School as a school do not seem to be coming true.

Politicians from the Vantaa Education and Learning Board will receive a report on the school network in the western part of Myyrmäki for approval on Tuesday. As part of it, it is proposed that the Tuomela school will not be used as a school in the future.

The fate of Tuomela School has shaken up in Vantaa in recent years. The school is located in Hämeenkylä in western Vantaa, and the residents of the area have strongly defended the school’s use of the building.

The city of Vantaa closed the Tuomela school in 2013 as part of the city’s financial and debt program. The school building served as an evacuation room for the students of the demolished Hämeenkylä school until the new Hämeenkylä school was completed in 2020.

Residents and activists defending the Tuomela school have hoped that the building would remain a local school for preschoolers and 1st-4th graders.

In In 2016, more than 4,000 municipal residents and 29 delegates signed a municipal initiative demanding the cancellation of the school closure. The now completed school network survey is a response to the initiative: according to the official proposal, the school use of the building does not make sense.

The final cessation of school use is justified by location and money. The commissioning of the school building would require an estimated EUR 5.4 million renovation.

Officials have investigated the use of the building in early childhood education, but the presentation states that its location is poor for this use: the current and projected number of children in the area is not large enough.

According to the study, converting a protected building into a kindergarten would mean an even larger renovation than renovating it for school use. In addition, the proposal states that a multi-storey building is not very suitable for early childhood education anyway.

According to the city, the location of the Tuomela school property is poor and the size is too small.

Tuomelan the school was completed in 1931. It has operated in a village-like area as a local school for the youngest schoolchildren.

The five-storey yellow school building is classified as very significant in terms of cultural history, as it is one of the first Finnish-language elementary schools.
