Norway’s postal service released a holiday commercial in which Santa Claus starts a gay relationship.
The video, available on Posten’s Twitter, shows a man sending a letter with the message: “Santa Claus, you are everything I want this Christmas.” On Christmas Day, a delivery woman brings presents and the good old man appears to the author of the letter, saying: “I got help this year, to be with you”. Then the two kiss.
Posten’s aim was to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the decriminalization of homosexuality in Norway. At the end of the advertisement, a written message points out: “In 2022, it will be 50 years since it became legal to love whoever you want in Norway. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!”.
“Posten is an inclusive workplace with great diversity, and we would like to celebrate this 50th anniversary with this beautiful love story,” said Monica Solberg, marketing director for the Norwegian postal service, in an interview with LGBTQ Nation.
Praised by progressives, the campaign was criticized by some Twitter users. “Leave Santa Claus alone! His sexualization is just wrong… whether gay or straight. I find this ad frightening and disturbing,” wrote one. Another asked: “Why does everything have to become gay these days?”
