The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced this Saturday that the Executive will convene a conference of regional presidents every six months. The first of these biannual appointments will take place on the island of La Palma. Sánchez made this announcement during his speech at the 14th Congress of the PSOE of the Canary Islands, which is being held this weekend in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. This is his second visit to the island since the La Palma volcano erupted on September 24. What will be the XXV Conference of Presidents, the 19th of Sánchez’s mandate in La Moncloa, of course, is delayed to early 2022, instead of being held in December, as planned. Until now, these meetings of regional leaders did not have a fixed periodicity.
Among the assistants of the Congress of the Canarian PSOE were also the Minister of Health, Carolina Darias, or the spokesman for the Socialists in the Congress of Deputies, Héctor Gómez. In the conclave, the regional president, Ángel Víctor Torres, will be re-elected as regional secretary general. During his speech, Pedro Sánchez has vindicated the need to have “spaces of agreement” to face “challenges of the State” that transcend any government. In this sense, the Chief Executive has given as examples the inter-territorial Health conferences in the framework of the pandemic or the meetings of regional presidents, such as the next one in La Palma.
Pedro Sánchez also traveled to La Palma this Friday in what has been his seventh visit to the island after the volcano erupted. In the late afternoon, the chief executive appeared before the media together with the president of the Cabildo palmero, Mariano Hernández Zapata (Popular Party). In his speech, Sánchez praised the importance of “having a strong and robust National Civil Protection System.” And in the same sense he has pronounced this Saturday: “We are living in moments of enormous importance, during these next ten years we are going to have to make an absolute, total and resounding revolution if we do not want the planet to derail, and we aspire to stop the effects of the climate change; that is going to require an effort from public and private administrations ”.
The president also stated that the “political task” of the socialists consists of “raising their gaze and being aware” that in order to resolve “effectively” crises such as the pandemic, climate change or irregular migrations, it is necessary to “reinforce no only the welfare state, but also the common European project and multilateralism ”. Regarding the situation on La Palma, the Prime Minister has demanded that all actors defend the general interest of the island and the entire Canary Islands. “There are two ways out of the crisis, and in a society like Spain’s, which is deeply unequal, the main challenge is to make inequality visible. You have to talk about it ”, he has riveted. The 10.8 square kilometers occupied by the volcano’s magma translate into damages of 906.8 million euros, according to the calculation of the Canarian institutions – City Councils, Cabildo and Government.
