Estonian military personnel, together with police officers and border guards, began to build temporary barriers on the border with Russia, writes ERR.
Work began in the north-east of the country in Narva in the Kuivaygi river bed, as well as in the south-east in the village of Meremäe and on the Piusa river. Deputy Director General of the Police and Border Guard Board for Border Protection Egert Belichev said that so far the migration pressure on Estonia has not increased, “but if it changes, the quick installation of temporary barriers will become an important component of preventing massive illegal migration.”
The country’s defense minister, Kalle Laanet, previously reported that the agency would install 130 km of barrage wire on the republic’s eastern border to prevent the “hybrid threat”. He also promised that the country will send 100 troops to the Polish-Belarusian border to resolve the migration crisis. Thousands of refugees from the Middle East arrived at the border with Poland in Belarus in early November, hoping to penetrate the territory of the European Union.
