Shoukry said, in a joint press conference after his talks with his Greek counterpart, Nikos Dendiadis, that “this government came in accordance with an agreement and understanding that was formulated and adopted by the United Nations, and therefore the United Nations should not be silent regarding the full and honest implementation of what it adopted and formulated from a clear agreement within The Libyan Dialogue Forum when it assigned this government to carry out its term of office and a specific task, which is to reach the end of the transitional period by holding elections on December 24, which is a responsibility that it did not assume.
He added that “the agreement was clear and had a specific time period that ended on June 22, and therefore this situation that is not based on any amount of legitimacy should not be dealt with,” stressing the need to hold parliamentary and presidential elections as soon as possible and support the relevant efforts of the Libyan House of Representatives.
The Egyptian Foreign Minister indicated that he “brought to his Greek counterpart the efforts made by Egypt to bring the views of the Libyan parties closer and the ongoing consultations on setting the constitutional framework on the basis of which the elections will be held and the completion of the transitional phase, which enhances the reaching of a Libyan-Libyan understanding to end The crisis leads to Libya regaining its full sovereignty and for the Libyan people to benefit from their capabilities away from any external interference.”
He explained that he and his Greek counterpart stressed the importance of the exit of foreign forces, mercenaries and foreign fighters from Libya within a specific time frame.
Shoukry added that it was emphasized during the talks with the Greek minister that the outgoing unity government in Tripoli “does not have the authority to conclude any international agreements or memoranda of understanding,” and agreed on the importance of the United Nations and the international community taking a clear and strong stance towards the outgoing government.
