With rivers rising, around 1,000 inmates were transferred from risk areas, according to the superintendent
The historic storm that has hit Rio Grande do Sul since last Sunday (April 28, 2024) caused the flooding of 5 prisons. One of them is the Jacuí State Penitentiary, in the city of Charqueadas, in the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre.
A Susepe (Superintendence of Penitentiary Services) reported this Saturday (May 4, 2024) the transfer of 1,057 inmates from the complex to the Charqueadas High Security Penitentiary, in the same municipality, but further away from the Jacuí River, which advances into the region.
Also isolated are:
• the Charqueadas State Modulated Penitentiary;
• the Charqueadas Penal Institute;
• the Charqueadas II State Penitentiary;
• and the Montenegro State Modulated Penitentiary.
Despite being flooded, these prisons operate normally and did not carry out transfers. The Arroio do Meio State Prison is isolated due to collapsed bridges and road closures.
