At least 33 people were killed and another 18 were injured in a Russian bombing of a residential area in Chernigov, in northern Ukraine, the country’s State Emergency Service said on Thursday.

“As of 18:20 (13:20 GMT), the bodies of 33 dead and 18 wounded were pulled from the rubble resulting from the air strikes,” the service said on its Telegram account. Rescue work “has been temporarily suspended due to heavy bombing”. Russian forces launched a missile attack on residential buildings in the center of the city on Thursday morning.

“Many buildings were damaged, windows were broken, walls and roofs were destroyed in some places,” the head of the Regional State Administration of Chernigov, Vyacheslav Chaus, told Telegram. “There are no military installations nearby. Nearby are hospitals, several schools and kindergartens, dozens of tall buildings,” he emphasized.

In addition, Russian planes attacked two schools and homes in the city, killing at least nine people and injuring four, according to the Unian news agency.
