President Sauli Niinistö attended an extraordinary summit of the military alliance NATO remotely on Friday.

Summit after NATO issued a statement saying Putin’s decision to attack Ukraine was a creepy strategic mistake.
NATO said it would deploy more troops to countries in the eastern part of the military alliance.
“We are making all the necessary troop investments to create a strong and credible deterrent,” the statement told Reuters.

To the summit not only the NATO countries but also the countries of the so-called strengthened partnership, Finland and Sweden, and the EU participated.
Partner countries do not automatically participate in NATO meetings. However, participation is not in itself exceptional. Finland and Sweden have usually received an invitation when matters concerning them have also been discussed.
Finland has recently participated in NATO defense ministerial meetings almost regularly.
NATO prime minister Jens Stoltenberg condemned the actions of Russia once again at the beginning of the meeting.
“Moscow is solely responsible for the deliberate, cold-blooded and long-planned intrusion [Ukrainaan]”Stoltenberg said.
“We condemn Russia’s aggression in the strongest possible terms and call on Russia to end its military action immediately. We stand by the brave Ukrainians, we fully support Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and its right to defend itself and choose its own path. ”
Stoltenberg announced an extraordinary meeting on Thursday after Russia launched a full-scale attack on Ukraine.
At the same time, he announcedthat NATO intends to activate its forces, including the Rapid Reaction Force, due to the situation.
Stoltenberg He also commented on Thursday on his message to NATO’s partner countries, Finland and Sweden, which are discussing NATO membership.
According to him, Finland and Sweden are very close partners of NATO and NATO does not intend to conclude agreements not to admit new members.
Russian spokesman for the State Department Marija Zaharova said on Friday that the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO would have military-political consequences.
“It is clear that the accession of Finland and Sweden to NATO, which is, as you well understand, a military alliance, would have serious military-political consequences that would require retaliation from our country,” Zaharova told a news conference at the Foreign Ministry.
The Russian Foreign Ministry has communicated Finland’s and Sweden’s NATO membership in the same tone also in the past.
