Of the United States president Joe Biden gives its long-awaited speech on Russia’s “unjustified and unprovoked” invasion of Ukraine. The speech is scheduled to begin on Thursday evening at about half past nine Finnish time. HS shows the speech live in this story.
The speech was already postponed once, so the timetable is only a preliminary estimate.
Biden is likely to talk about new sanctions against Russia in his speech. After the President of Russia Vladimir Putin began military operations in Ukraine early Thursday morning, Biden said of further “consequences” during Thursday.
For now The United States has imposed sanctions on Russia that are considered rather mild. The hardest means were saved in case of an attack.
One possibility is to exclude Russia from the international Swift payment system. This is considered one of the most severe sanctions. The practical effect would be that it would become very difficult to transfer all payments to or from Russia.
