Radio Echo in Moscow, a symbol of the struggle for democracy in Russia, went off the air this Thursday (3), after using the terms “war” and “invasion” in its programming. The communications regulatory agency in the country, Roskomnadzor, ordered the temporary suspension of the broadcaster, until it stopped using the censored terms. The approved expression is “special military operation in Donbass”.

The radio board understood that it would not be possible to change its editorial line and opted for dissolution. The decision came two days after the censorship, which accused the vehicle of being “deliberately spreading false information about the action of the Russian military”.

TV Dojd is suspended in the country for the same reasons. Last week, Roskomnadzor threatened ten independent media outlets if they insisted on using the terms war, attack or invasion. Fines of up to 5 million rubles (R$300,000) can be applied to anyone who fails to comply with the determination.
