A Russian bombing destroyed a theater that housed hundreds of residents of the Ukrainian city of Mariupol, on Wednesday (16), causing an unknown number of victims. Ukraine’s parliament said the theater had been reduced to rubble, and it was not known if there were any survivors.
According to the deputy mayor of Mariupol, Serhiy Orlov, between 1,000 and 1,200 people were hiding in the theater. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said the case was “another horrible war crime” committed by Russia in Mariupol and that the building “is completely destroyed”.
“There was a massive Russian attack on the Drama Theater where hundreds of innocent civilians were hiding,” Kuleba wrote on Twitter, quipping that “Russians could not have known it was a civilian shelter.”
Mariupol is a strategic port city situated on the shores of the Sea of Azov and between the Crimean peninsula and the breakaway Donbas region, making its capture a priority military target for Russia.
