Russia.- The government of russia prohibited the use in its territory of social networks belonging to the company Meta, considering it an “extremist” organization, so Russian citizens will not be able to use Facebook and Instagram.
“The activity of the American multinational Meta Platforms to offer the social networks Facebook and Instagram in the territory of the Russian Federation for extremist activities is prohibited,” the Tverskói court ruled in a statement released on the Telegram instant messaging platform.
The ruling of the Russian Judiciary, which complied with the demand made by the Prosecutor’s Office of the European country, does not apply to the WhatsApp app, because the platform does not contain functions or tools for the public dissemination of information.

Likewise, it should be clarified that despite the fact that the services of both social networks were blocked throughout the Russian territory, the Prosecutor’s Office did not qualify the use of these as participation in extremist activities.
This Monday, the giant Meta asked the Russian Judiciary to reject the request made by the Public Ministry, however it was denied, at the same time that the request to postpone the blocking of Facebook and Instagram was also ignored.
The reason for the process that took place this day was the temporary lifting by the ban on citizens of various countries from publishing information calling for violent acts against Russian residents, as a result of the invasion of Ukraine ordered by the president Vladimir Putin.
As a result, the Russian Investigative Committee proceeded to open a criminal case due to Meta’s refusal to lower the calls for violence against Russiansincluding the military.
More than a week ago, Meta announced that it would allow users to bypass the rules of use of their applications and be able to post messages that, normally, would be prohibited, due to the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Through a statement, Andy Stone, spokesman for Meta, clarified that the exceptions that the company would make would be allowed on a temporary basis due to the invasion of Russian troops in Ukrainian territory, this if they don’t include “credible” death threats against Russian civilians.
