Department of Health considers that there has been a “large reduction” in the number of cases in recent weeks; the worst period was in February
A Municipal Health Department of Rio de Janeiro announced the end of the dengue epidemic in the city this Friday (29.mar.2024). According to Secretary Daniel Soranz, the municipality recorded 7 deaths and 82,000 cases of the disease. In recent weeks, however, there has been a large reduction in cases.
The worst period of the epidemic was from February 18 to 24, when the city recorded 13,511 cases. Since then, the municipality has been showing a decline. In the last week with consolidated data (March 17th to 23rd), there were 5,395 occurrences – a 33% decrease compared to the previous week.
“There was an emptying of the dengue care centers, so we can now say that we are leaving the epidemic period and the dengue emergency in the city”, declared Soranz.
According to the secretary, around 1,100 health professionals were involved in the mobilization against dengue. The 10 service centers opened in February will begin to be demobilized this Friday (29th March).
“We can now use this workforce to combat influenza and the main vaccination campaign on the calendar, which is the influenza vaccine”, stated Soranz.
Vaccination
The secretary stated that this will be the last week of immunizing children and adolescents aged 10 to 14 with the 1st dose of the dengue vaccine.
“There are still 40,000 doses of dengue vaccine in stock. So we ask that parents who have not yet brought their children to protect themselves look for a health unit to apply the 1st dose of the vaccine,” said Soranz.
