Singapore, Singapore.– Mexican driver Sergio Pérez said that some Red Bull engineers apologised to him after the Italian GP as they now have a clearer understanding of the problems with the RB20.
Checo had a good start to the 2024 F1 season, but began to struggle with the car. Now three-time champion Max Verstappen is also having problems, which has caused the team to lose the lead in the Constructors’ Championship.
“Some of the engineers after Monza came to me and apologised, because now it’s much clearer what the problems were that I was talking about,” Perez said ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix. “But also, to be fair, I’ve always had the full support of all the engineers. There was also speculation about it and people were talking about it, that the problem was that I wasn’t focusing enough on my racing or other things, but in the end, I’m happy that we discovered the problem and that we can focus on it and improve it.”
The tricolor indicated that they are working to find solutions and feel that they are on the right path.
“I think the problem I had at the beginning of the year is that I had a car that I couldn’t drive. I was very uncomfortable with the car going into the corners without knowing what it was going to do. It’s really difficult to maximise your performance[in that situation]but I think now the team has found a direction for a lot of our problems, so now at least we know what the problems are, and we can drive around them,” he said. “Before we didn’t know, so it was very difficult to drive and I’m happy that it seems we’re going in the right direction. And I think if we’re able to confirm what we’ve done in Baku, our system can make a 180-degree turn, and still finish strongly.” Checo added that after the accident with Carlos Sainz at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix the car is almost ready. “The guys, as usual, have done a tremendous job, and we’re on the last spec. So yeah, very surprised. The team is pushing hard. And I didn’t expect to be on the last spec, and by the looks of it, I am,” he said.
