In an opinion piece (HS 22.9.) perspectives on school planning were brought up. We appreciate the feedback.
The starting point for spatial planning in the schools of the city of Helsinki is pedagogy and its needs for students and learning. The students’ and the entire school community’s well-being, sense of community, learning needs, safety and health guide the design of the facilities. The facilities must provide a framework for different types of learning situations, such as group work and various interaction situations.
It should be possible to learn in different ways and methods in the facilities. The premises, loose furniture and the yard are planned in cooperation with the staff, taking certain restrictions into account, for example in relation to premises security. The students also participate in loose furniture and yard planning.
Basic education is organized for students living in the area at a nearby school. For ecological and cost reasons, the schools are sized so that the facilities are in use all day and also for active sports and resident use after the school day. Sustainable development is also promoted by recycling furniture.
In Helsinki, school facilities are planned and dimensioned so that each group can find a space suitable for the learning situation. Easily movable furniture and different surface materials enable different ways of learning and teaching in spaces that transform in different ways. The school staff plans and decides how the facilities are used. Our skilled personnel play a key role in planning the facilities and evaluating the functionality of the facilities.
We regularly collect user feedback on space planning solutions. Based on the feedback, we have also taken our lessons and modified the space planning guidelines so that the planning emphasizes the calmness of learning situations and the acoustics that support learning.
Cell lobbies are no longer implemented in schools that are now under construction. In addition to collecting feedback, we in the field of education and training follow national and international learning environment research and do active research collaboration with, for example, the University of Helsinki. We want to create pedagogically functional spaces that function as student learning spaces and staff workspaces today and in the future.
