‘Why doesn’t JA21 think about society as a whole?’ and ‘Compliments to the king for his spontaneous visit and support for the emergency services in Rotterdam’: these are some reactions to topics from the news that concern readers. Below are the letters that appeared in the newspaper of Thursday 25 November. You can send in a response yourself via [email protected].
Riots | To participate you must be corrected
‘We have completely forgotten about doing normal’ (AD 24-11). It is unfortunate that these bio-psychological analyzes of transgressive behavior are often emphasized. In my view, our fast-paced information society requires a review of basic conditions, guidelines and starting points. Shouldn’t the tsunami of challenges, incentives and information confronting young people rather be answered with positive exemplary behavior from parents and government, better quality education, with smaller class sizes? To participate in society, you play within the lines and you are kept within the lines. If we start doing this now and invest in it, we will reap the benefits in a few years’ time and we will be able to restore the social infrastructure of our partly derailed society. Action now. The pockets are deep and full enough.
Herwijn van Elswijk, Zoetermeer.
Riots II | Is he content to make the news in this way?
‘Shooted protester: Wasn’t out for riots’ (AD 24-11) With increasing astonishment and rising blood pressure I read the story of professional protester Marco Buis, 50 years old. Almost died, luckily there was a hospital bed and doctor present. Marco, hope you get back on your feet soon, warrior. It’s unbelievable that people like this exist. What does he think he will achieve with this? Does he work, does he receive benefits? Wasn’t out for riots? I think you could quickly see that things were getting out of hand. And then you make the news this way. Advice: seek help. My wife is on the waiting list for an operation, but because of these idiots it will take a while.
Dick van Dijk, Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel.
Riots III | Suppose a rescuer had died, what then?
Dear Marco, you indicate that you do not find it normal that the police have fired a target. Perhaps, because you yourself have been hit and say you are innocent. But many will disagree with you. When the cops shoot in the air first to defend themselves and the group of rioters come closer like a bunch of zombies out The Walking Dead, then target shooting is the only option. So stop squeaking. If you burn your butt, you have to sit on the blisters. As the wife of a firefighter who was there during the riot, I can only tell you that I didn’t rest that night until my husband was safely back at the station. And with me a lot of families. Think about that. How would you have reacted if a rescuer had been killed by one of your fellow protesters? Was that normal?
Anita Remmerswaal, Wassenaar.
Plan JA21 | Finally a party that tackles crime in a targeted manner
JA21 finds: Convicted three times? Then 40 years in prison’ (AD 24-11). Finally, a political party has emerged with a plan that will prevent a large number of crimes: if you continue committing crimes after three convictions, you will be imprisoned for 40 years, so you cannot commit crimes in those 40 years. Great plan and can’t get enough of it. According to legal expert Benjamin Rooij, JA21 makes a mistake: you should not look at individual cases, but at the effect on society as a whole. The plan wouldn’t prevent crime, either. Why not look at individual cases? Are the murders of Anne Faber, Derk Wiersum, Hymeyra and Peter R. de Vries too individual? And why doesn’t the plan prevent crime? Of course it prevents crime. The notorious thug can’t commit crimes for 40 years. As a result, in random order, a sharp fall in crime figures, fewer victims of violence, a fall in premiums for all kinds of insurance, less pressure on the judiciary, a lot of time saved by the police and increased safety on the street. So, Benjamin van Rooij, why does JA21 not think about society as a whole?
Nico van Huussen, De Meern.
Visit King | Congratulations for the action
There is a lot of criticism of him. So now a compliment to the king for his spontaneous visit and support for the emergency services in Rotterdam.
Pauline de Graaf, Valkenburg.
Keep your distance | Can we really get rid of this virus this way?
‘Mandatory back to 1.5 meters’ (AD 24-11). So from now on we have to take into account 1,5 meters again. Why not last week and the week before that? Because there was no virus then? How are they going to check this? A cop in every supermarket or maybe through security cameras? A boa or a mayor on every street corner who calls things to order and keeps an eye on them? I wonder: are we really getting rid of this virus this way?
