‘Men leave the woman behind in all the misery’ and ‘Nobody shows guts and leadership’: these are some reactions to news topics that concern readers. Below are the letters that appeared in the newspaper of Tuesday 16 November. You can send in a response yourself via [email protected].
Billions to nitrogen | Number one problem is not the nitrogen crisis
‘Mes goes deep into livestock around nature reserves’ (AD 15-11). Tens of billions for nature. Magnificent. However, it is incorrect to call the nitrogen problem number one. Problem number one is that our government – or what must pass for it – again has no regard for the primary interests of the people. A housing shortage and poor health care are really much more important. Should mass housing construction wait 10 years until nitrogen is ‘under control’? We have two ministers at Public Health. Are they clovering? Hell, our IC capacity is a third of that in England, Germany, France, Belgium. Double the training for people who can work on the IC, purchase beds and other equipment. Build a special IC hospital in the center of the country. Don’t complain about money, because apparently there is.

Glasgow Environment Summit | The Club of Rome predicted it in 1972
‘A little bit of success and a little bit of blah blah blah’ (AD 15-11). What a lot of meaningless promises without consequences if a country makes a mess of it. The Bolsonaro in Brazil gives permission to exploit the rainforest without any problems. These are the lungs of our earth and there is no country threatening sanctions. There is also too much emphasis on fossil fuels and CO2 emissions. Both are very important, but there are no real alternatives yet. Nobody wants a windmill in their area. Driving on a battery is very harmful to the environment because they do not grow on trees. Think that hydrogen will become more important in the long term. What I missed at the top is the growth of the world population of more than 200,000 per day. This growth is unsustainable and will eventually lead to many shortages such as drinking water, food, building materials, wood and so on. Harsh measures are needed to save the environment and humanity. The Club of Rome already predicted it in the early 1970s, but only a few took it seriously: we will have to make a revolution or it will look bad.

Measures Austria | We have to get rid of the slack here
Austria introduces a lockdown for unvaccinated people. Good idea. Most hospital admissions are caused by unvaccinated people. So you wouldn’t have had to lie there if you had had a shot. Austria continues well. We can learn something from that. Let’s stop with all that nuance and poldering. National implementation is important to avoid situations such as those in Eindhoven. A shopkeeper there has been threatened because of his ‘coronadoor policy’, in which he refused access to his shop to unvaccinated people. Enforcement will still be an issue, but we have to get rid of the slack action to date.

Afghanistan national football team | Volk will have fun, but a spiciness remains
‘We play football for the people and not for the Taliban’ (AD 13-11). It sounds very nice and you are sure to bring joy to the people of Afghanistan. But I really don’t understand that you play football for a country, that your parents have fled because of the regime. Now you do represent the regime there and respect their national anthem before a match. Your parents fled for a reason.
Nanny Barthen, The Hague.
Column Saskia Noort | Shame, men who plunge women into misery
‘A commercial against abortion is a travesty in 2021’ (Column 13-11). How I agree with the words from Saskia Noort’s column in Saturday’s newspaper. Women are always expected to be ready for men and if they accidentally become pregnant, the men will tell them what to do. Those men take no responsibility for their behavior (read: lust) and leave the woman behind with all the misery. Scandalous.

Formation | Nine months of lack of leadership and guts
‘D66 top still breaks down about new leadership’ (AD 15-11). The formation talks have been going on for nine months now and it is a difficult delivery. Nobody shows guts and leadership. And it is precisely here that there is a great lack of it. No one dares to make a decision anymore. And citizens are moving further and further away from politics.

Grasshoppers | This is how the day started well
The front page of yesterday’s AD was again extremely funny. Almost across the board an article with the headline: ‘Knife goes deep into livestock around nature reserves’, and on the far right a photo with the headline: ‘Tasty grasshoppers’. My day started nice.
