Vladimir Putin ordered the Russian army on Monday to “keep the peace” in the pro-Russian separatist territories of Ukraine whose independence he recognized. Two decrees of the Russian president ask the Ministry of Defense that “the armed forces of Russia (assume) peacekeeping functions in the territory” of the “people’s republics” of Donetsk and Lugansk.

No timetable for the deployment or its magnitude was announced in the documents, each one page long and published on the site of the Russian database of legal texts.

Russia has been deploying for two weeks tens of thousands of soldiers on Ukraine’s borders, which, according to Western countries, are ready to invade the neighbor.

The recognition of the independence of both territories opens the way to a Russian military deployment at its request. Putin also signed mutual aid agreements with the two regions that, with the support of Russia, have been fighting the Ukrainian armed forces for eight years.
