NURSULTAN (Reuters) – Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed victory on Monday in defending Kazakhstan in what he described as a terrorist uprising with international backing, and promised leaders of other former Soviet republics that the alliance led by Moscow will protect them too.
Kazakhstan’s largest city, Almaty, was virtually back to normal on Monday after a week of unrest, by far the worst episode of violence in 30 years of independence in the most stable of Central Asia’s former Soviet republics.
Cleaning professionals removed debris accumulated in the streets, next to burned vehicles. Most stores have reopened, public transport and normal traffic have returned, and the internet has been re-established for several hours in the city for the first time since last Wednesday.
The square next to the town hall, burned down during the uprising, was firmly occupied by security forces and closed to the public. Police searched cars at checkpoints.
Putin sent paratroopers last week to protect strategic locations after anti-government protesters looted and set fire to public buildings. It is estimated that dozens of people were killed in clashes between security forces and protesters in cities across the country.
Russia’s quick action demonstrated the Kremlin’s readiness to use force to safeguard its influence in the countries of the former Soviet Union, at a time when Moscow is in a stalemate with the West because of thousands of soldiers close to the border with Ukraine. .
