Price of cars | The tax increase had such consequences on the price of favorite cars

Value added tax fresh raise might go unnoticed in everyday goods if the price tag only goes up by cents.

On the other hand, the tax, which has increased from 24 percent to 25.5 percent, stands out more clearly for large purchases.

We compared price lists of popular car models before and after the tax increase.

Based on them, the prices of popular cars have risen by about 1.2 percent, which is calculated in line with the tax increase.

For comparison, we selected models that have been of first registrations i.e. practically at the top of the new car lists. The most popular car at the beginning of the year is Toyota Corollathe price of the station wagon version increased by around 400–540 euros, depending on the equipment level.

That is, the best-selling all-electric car Volvo’s EX30 the most stripped-down version now costs 500 euros more than before.

The amount, of course, increases the more expensive the car. The plush Maybach SUV version of Mercedes-Benz’s all-electric car EQS costs 209,800 euros, an increase of 2,500 euros.

All did not raise prices. For example, Hyundai changed the prices of a few of its models, but according to the importer, it is not related to taxation.

The brand’s stock has yet to be sold, so the price of the Ioniq 5 and 6 fully electric cars, for example, was kept the same.

Tesla’s price list is also unchanged. It is commented on Tesla’s communication that the most popular Model Y car the price will remain the same until the end of September.

To the new ones the increasing car tax “inside” the total price makes a small dent in cars.

It means a tax to be paid only once, when a car using a combustion engine is put into use in Finland.

In practice, the amount of the tax is shaped based on the car’s retail price and emissions. The first mentioned rises because of Alvi, so the tax also increases.

For example, a very common one Nissan Qashqai – you have to pay 4,622 euros in car tax for the cheapest light hybrid SUV. It is estimated to be 56 euros more than before.

Used ones the tax change should not have a significant effect on the price of cars.

If a private person sells the car to a dealer, the dealer cannot make a VAT deduction. On the other hand, when the business resells the car, the sales price includes, as if hidden, the value added tax that came with the car.

In this case, the margin taxation procedure can be applied, whereby the retailer pays the tax only on the profit margin – i.e. the difference between the selling price and the purchase price.

We collected the used prices of several favorite cars from different stores before and after the turn of the month.

On Monday, however, there were no significant changes in their prices: the vast majority of cars were priced as before, with a few exceptions.

A good 6,500 passenger cars were registered during the month, which is more than a 16 percent drop compared to a year ago. The entire beginning of the year has gone down by 17 percent compared to January–August last year.

The trade of used cars, on the other hand, is slipping: keys have changed hands six percent more than last year in trade-in car shops.
