The pavilion of the Muslim Council of Elders at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair organized a cultural symposium, entitled “Possible Solutions to Confront Hate,” with the participation of Dr. Muhammad Al-Ali, President of the Trends Center for Research and Studies, and Khalifa Khaled, Secretary-General of the Emirates Students Association, member of the Peacemakers Forum, and aimed at possible solutions to confront hatred and how to deal With promoters of hate speech and religious and ethnic intolerance.
During the symposium, Dr. Muhammad Al-Ali warned that hate speech threatens to fulfill the “clash of civilizations” prophecy, which calls for researching more effective means and mechanisms to combat hate speech, calling for the development and completion of legislative and legal frameworks that criminalize all forms of discrimination and hatred and their resolute application in societies, with the development of Strict controls to prevent the spread of hate speech through social media, work to build a rational anti-hate speech, and provide an appropriate environment that supports tolerance and acceptance of the other.
The head of the Trends Center for Research and Studies added that religious and cultural institutions and think tanks have an important and effective role in continuing to work to dismantle and refute speeches of hate and extremism, and to spread discourses of tolerance, dialogue and human brotherhood instead.
For his part, Khalifa Khaled, Secretary-General of the Emirates Student Association and member of the Peacemakers Forum, stressed the need for everyone to unite to address hate speech and racism and to involve all active institutions to combat such negative practices and work to establish the values of coexistence, promote peace and brotherhood and spread the values of goodness, love and peace.
It is noteworthy that the Muslim Council of Elders is participating in a special pavilion at the Abu Dhabi International Book Fair, which is currently taking place and will continue until May 29.
