Allocation of seats
How are the votes divided in the 2022 general elections (live broadcast of the day above)? The votes cast by the voters are recorded in percentages. The method by which the voting percentages are transformed into the allocation of electoral seats is contained in the electoral law, and can consist of a majority, proportional or mixed method. The Rosatellum (Law 165/2017), the law with which the vote will be taken in the elections of 25 September, is a mixed, majority and proportional system. Compared to the previous electoral law (known as “Mattarellum”), also with a mixed system, the proportion between single-member and multi-member constituencies changes. In the Mattarellum, 75 percent of the seats were assigned with the majority system and 25 percent with the proportional system. On the contrary with the Rosatellum, the three eighths (37.5 per cent) of the seats in the Chamber and Senate are assigned with the majority system (147 deputies and 74 senators) and the five eighths (62.5 per cent) with the proportional system blocked lists (245 deputies and 122 senators).
