What else is Vladimir Putin planning? The top German army general is warning more urgently than ever about a possible Russian attack on NATO.
Berlin – How far would Vladimir Putin go? The autocrat from Moscow? The ruler from Russia? The Ukraine War serves as a warning example of the Kremlin chief’s imperialism.
Threat from Vladimir Putin: Bundeswehr general warns of Russian attack
Carsten Breuer, Inspector General of the armed forceshas once again and vehemently warned against a possible Russian attack under Putin on the defence alliance NATO warned in the coming years.
“We are observing that the Russian army is being directed towards the West,” Breuer told Saxon NewspaperIn five to eight years, Moscow’s armed forces will be so equipped in terms of material and personnel that an attack on NATO territory would be possible, said the confidant of the German Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius (SPD).
Warning about Vladimir Putin: Pistorius confidant talks about Russian tanks
“The Russian army is increasing its tank numbers by 1,000 to 1,500 more each year. The five largest European NATO member states have only half of that number,” Breuer said in the interview published on Tuesday (July 23). The German army has around 300 battle tanks, explained the Army General (Land Forces).
Breuer said: “If this capability is accompanied by the intention that can be read off from Putin’s speeches, that should alarm us. My job is to think of such a worst-case scenario. For the Bundeswehr, that means: We have to be prepared for this possibility in five years. That is the only way we can deter people.” However, the new threat situation has not yet reached everyone, said the 59-year-old Sauerlander, referring to the German public.
Carsten Breuer
Carsten Breuer is an Army General and has been the 17th Inspector General of the Bundeswehr since March 17, 2023. This makes him the highest general and commander of the German armed forces. In close cooperation with Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD), the 59-year-old Sauerlander is jointly responsible for the practical implementation of the “turning point” in German defense policy.
Russian attack on NATO? Defense alliance worried about Suwalki gap
In his assessment, Breuer relied on analyses by the German army, information from secret services and allied forces, and statements by the Russian president. Many observers of the Ukraine war have a theory: Russian regime could have a conflict with NATO in the Suwalki Gap on the Polish-Lithuanian border. To put it into context: The Suwalki Corridor stretches over 104 kilometers near the small Polish town of Suwalki between the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad and Belarus.
This relatively narrow strip of land between Poland and the Baltic states is considered to be NATO’s Achilles heel. While (not only) the Russian tank losses in Ukraine remain devastating, there is another theory about a possible Russian attack direction in the event of an attack on NATO territory. Specifically: According to one expert, the Russian army holds the Lithuanian capital Vilnius hostage and use it as a bargaining chip.
Russian autocrat Vladimir Putin: Lithuanian Vilnius as a target of attack in NATO?
Political scientist Christian Mölling from the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) recently explained in the ARD documentary “NATO – who will protect Europe?”: “The story goes something like this: That is about 30, 40 kilometers from the (Belarusian, d. Red.) border to Vilnius. Russia actually manages to get to Vilnius with massive deployment of material and soldiers. They lose a lot of people, but they manage to take Vilnius and then offer peace negotiations. Then it’s not about NATO’s military strength, but about political solidarity and the question: will Germany and Paris send soldiers to liberate Vilnius? Or not?”
The German Minister of Defense also repeatedly and publicly warns: “A large part or part of what is newly produced no longer goes to the front, but ends up in the depots,” Pistorius said at the end of April on the ARD program “Maischberger” about the Russian arms industry and warned against Putin’s aggressive policy: “Now you can be naive and say that he is only doing this out of caution. As a skeptical person, I would rather say in this case: He is doing this because he has or could have something planned.” (pm)
