Phenol peeling: know the risks of the procedure that killed a 27-year-old young man

Dermatologist Abdo Salomão Jr., from the Brazilian Society of Dermatology (SBD), states that the treatment should only be performed in hospitals due to its health risks.

“It is a scheduled burn, in which the entire epidermis and part of the dermis are removed. The results are brilliant, but it is a procedure that is out of use. It is very painful, there is a high risk of scars and spots, people spend two to three months with a red face, a month without leaving the house and a week without even opening their eyes. So, despite the results, it is practically no longer done and the demand is very low,” explains Salomão Jr.

In addition to pain and scars, phenol peeling presents other risks such as:

• Infections: If protocols are not followed properly, there is a high risk of infection by viruses, bacteria and fungi.
• Changes in pigmentation: Even if the technique is performed correctly, there may be permanent changes in skin color, blemishes, and scars.
• Health problems: The procedure is contraindicated for people with kidney, liver, heart problems, dark skin or with a high level of melanin.

In the technique, phenol penetrates the most superficial layer of the skin (epidermis), causing necrosis of that “old skin” and inducing an inflammatory reaction in the innermost layers of the skin, such as the dermis. It stimulates the production of collagen and consequently “born” more rejuvenated skin.

Henrique reportedly complained of severe pain shortly after completing the procedure and fainted. A team of Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) He arrived at the scene, but the patient did not resist and died.

The process is also effective against melasma and in the treatment of acne, but the result is not as visible as in cases of aging. As it is an aesthetic treatment that requires a lot of care, its price can reach up to 30 thousand reais.

The recovery period It is usually extremely painful and can take up to a year and a half until the face heals completely.

It is necessary to have a daily follow-up in the first month, for any doubts that may arise, but also for changes in the face, since the skin will be burning and becoming necrotic.

Doctors recommend performing phenol peeling in the winter months, since the cold prevents the dilation of the vessels, which makes the face less puffy during recovery.
