Red Bull’s memorable weekend in the United States was embellished not only by the victory of Max Verstappen, but also by the third place of Sergio Perez. The Mexican, supported by the warm cheer of his compatriots – who will see him again at work in the next GP scheduled in Mexico City – has in fact conquered the fourth podium of the season at the end of a flawless race, proving convincing for the entire duration of the American weekend.
However, the placement obtained by Checo it is even more emblematic when one considers how much he had to suffer, sul physical plane, throughout the entire Austin weekend. The number 11, in fact, landed in the United States suffering from some bouts of diarrhea, aggravating his suboptimal state of health during the race. For 56 laps, Perez had to deal with a failure to the spout that allows pilots to hydrate during the event: the Mexican was forced to continue the activity on the track without ever drinking, moreover with the air temperature close to 30 degrees.
Interviewed immediately after the race, the Red Bull driver was able to catch his breath after the considerable efforts: “In the second stint I was losing my strength – commented – and it certainly was the toughest race of my career from a physical point of view. I hope this is the first and last time this happens and that I feel this way. By the way, from lap 20 onwards, I could no longer drink water, and from that point on I felt exhausted. I fought hard to get to the finish line. As for the race – he added – there were some positive aspects such as the podium, but also the fact that he helped Max with an excellent team game. My GP was compromised by the medium tires, which wore out very quickly, considering the heat which increased the degradation ”.
