The Turkish Grand Prix, like several others during this season, was marked by a lot of confusion and several twists. Strategy became central, while the damp track misled several riders, especially at the start of the race. In these complex conditions it was foreseeable that there would be work to be done also for the race direction and so it was. Two drivers were sanctioned during the GP, both for episodes that occurred in the first laps.
At the start, in curve 1, Pierre Gasly he found himself caught between Sergio Perez’s Red Bull and Fernando Alonso’s Alpine. The Frenchman from AlphaTauri was unable to manage well the limited space available and hit Alonso’s car, which ended in a spin. Usually during the first round the stewards are more tolerant, but in this case the responsibility was deemed “completely” to be attributed to the native of Rouen. In fact, according to the commissioners’ judgment, the impact “was not inevitable” and the pilot, at that moment, “was not tightly sandwiched”. Shortly after, however, it was the Oviedo native himself who was ‘pinched’ by the judges. Alonso in fact, in an attempt to recover, he rammed Mick Schumacher in turn 4, spending his son of art in a spin.
In both cases, the penalty applied was five seconds added to the race time and two points inflicted on the respective Superlicenses. Curiously right Mick Schumacher, with Daniel Ricciardo, on the other hand, he remains the only ‘spotless’ driver during the last 12 months of racing. The German and the Australian are the only ones who still have their 12 points on the license intact. Schumacher obviously has an advantage in not having previous penalties, being a rookie in the category, but he was just as good at avoiding accidents that instead involved almost all of his colleagues during the year.
Ricciardo, for his part, unmarked a few weeks ago the last penalty point that had remained on his record, dating back to the 2020 Russian GP. Worthy of mention from this point of view, are also the two Ferrari drivers, Charles Leclerc And Carlos Sainz. In fact, both Maranello ‘ponies’ are still at zero penalties received in 2021. However, they still carry with them the penalties suffered last year, which will expire in the coming weeks.
