McCree, the famous character of Overwatch, change name in response to the episodes of harassment which featured the homonymous game designer Jesse McCree.
As you will certainly remember, Blizzard was denounced for male chauvinism and maltreatment of workers, in the context of situations that involved McCree, who was later fired by the company.
“In the life of every cowboy there comes a time when you have to stop and take a stand”, reads the post that Blizzard posted on Twitter to communicate the change.
“To make the new Overwatch better, to do the right thing, he had to be honest with his team and with himself. The cowboy he was rode into the sunset, and into the dawn. Cole Cassidy he came to face the world. “
Jesse McCree left the company last August, after he ended up at the center of the controversy, and at the time the development team wrote a message to fans to assure them that certain behaviors would no longer be tolerated.
Cole Cassidy will be available under his new name in Overwatch starting October 26.
