Dozens of historians, writers, journalists, readers and users of the BNE sign a manifesto regarding the lack of protection of heritage
«It is unacceptable that the employees of the National Library of Spain (BNE) have to face people with umbrellas floods like those experienced this weekthe result of an evident deterioration of the facilities,” reads the manifesto released this Friday and signed by dozens of historians, writers, journalists, readers and users of the BNE. In the text, written by Luis Spanishit is recalled that, as Law 1/2015, of March 24, says, «the National Library of Spain (BNE) keeps the memory of the Spanish State; preserves knowledge and spreads knowledge” and that, therefore, it deserves care that it seems it is not taking.
«It should be obvious, for any enlightened person, that the National Library is above all parties, that it represents all Spain and all Hispanidad. Their collections are unique. Public powers must protect it. It is a legal obligation and a moral duty. We are not owners of the heritage of knowledge that we have inherited from past generations, which we must transmit, increasing it, conserving it and improving its access. For this reason, we demand that the authorities and of course the current Minister of Culture, in his capacity as president of the Library, as well as his successors, adopt all technical and economic measures to protect the integrity of our Library, giving them absolute priority. , so that situations like those experienced this week do not occur again,” he concludes.
