SAO PAULO (Reuters) – Electricity load should have stronger growth in April, while the country’s main hydroelectric reservoirs should continue to show recovery, according to estimates by the National Electric System Operator (ONS) released this Friday.
The agency expects the load to advance 3.7% in April compared to the same month of 2021, after a weak performance in the first months of the year. Closed data show a drop of 0.4% in the indicator in January and a rise of 1.1% in February. The forecast for the end of March, released last week, pointed to an increase of 1.7%.
The reservoirs in the Southeast and Midwest, where the largest hydroelectric lakes in the country are located, should end the month of April with 69% of capacity, compared to 62.5% currently recorded.
The ONS also projected that the region’s hydroelectric plants will receive rainfall equivalent to 75% of the historical average in April.
In the South, where the drought was severe between the end of last year and the beginning of the year, the situation improves, with rainfall at 97% of the historical average for the month.
As for the North, the expectation is that rainfall exceeds the average (113%), while in the Northeast the rains should be 43%.
