US President Joe Biden makes the first visit of his administration to the Middle East. The main agenda of meetings with Israeli and Saudi officials is to ensure that Iran does not become a nuclear power.
Since taking office, Biden has cited the nuclear deal with Iran as a key priority, continuing negotiations with Barack Obama in 2015 and Donald Trump in 2018. However, the current president has not been successful in talks with Iranians.
Until then, the proposal was to impose restrictions on the nuclear program in exchange for relief from sanctions imposed by the Americans. However, Iran has made quick gains in developing its nuclear program and has had no interest in negotiating.
In an editorial published last Saturday (9) in the Washington Post, Biden said he hoped the Iranians would return to negotiations. “My government will continue to increase diplomatic and economic pressure until Iran is ready to re-comply with the 2015 nuclear deal.”
Iranian production is so strong that on Monday, White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan said he believed Iran would send armed drones to Russia for use in Ukraine.
