The topic of power units and their reliability continues to hold the ground at Mercedes. After having suffered penalties for the homologation of new components both in Monza and in Russia, in fact, Valtteri Bottas will click with a retreat of five positions on the grid also in the United States GP. The Finnish driver from the Brackley team will have a sixth unit of internal combustion engine (ICE) and new exhaust system (EX) on his W12. Fresh from his success in Turkey – and the last winner in Austin, in 2019 – the native of Nastola will therefore have to experience yet another uphill weekend of his troubled season.
A decision, that of the Brackley team, which is certainly significant especially in terms of the sprint against Red Bull and which has been explained as follows: “The reason for the change is based on the will of seek the best possible performance and reliability from now to the end of the season“.
But the penalties in view of Sunday’s race for the Mercedes motorized teams are not over. In addition to the Aston Martin of Sebastian Vettel, who had already confirmed the change of power unit yesterday at the press conference, will also start the Williams of George Russell. The Englishman, future teammate of Lewis Hamilton in 2022, has replaced all the components of his engine. For now, the only team with the power units built in Brixworth to escape this rain of more or less planned replacements is McLaren. Yet another confirmation of how much reliability will be crucial in the final part of this championship.
