The hacker of Nintendo Gary Bowser was sentenced to three years in prison and will also have to pay a whopping $ 14.5 million fine. Bowser was the face of the Nintendo ROM hacker group Team Xecuter, a team known for developing and selling modchips.
He was arrested in October 2020 and brought to trial in the United States for facing 11 crimes, including money laundering and computer fraud. Bowser originally pleaded guilty to only two counts: “conspiracy to circumvent technology measures and trafficking in circumventing devices,” but more news and evidence has since emerged about other things he was involved in.
Bowser was originally serving more than ten years in prison, but his lawyers managed to convince the courts to cut him down to just forty months. At the time of this writing, we have no comment from Bowser or his lawyers on the situation or the ruling.
Nintendo released a statement stating that it “appreciate the hard work and tireless efforts of federal prosecutors and law enforcement agencies to curb illegal activities on a global scale that cause great harm to Nintendo and the video game industry“.
